The Fastest Warship in the World in 1988-89 was the USS Gemini (PHM 6). Gemini was the fastest of the six Pegasus-class PHM hydrofoil patrol boats the United States Navy operated out of Key West in the '80s and '90s. The Coast Guard lacked a sufficiently fast vessel to catch drug smugglers in "go-fast" Cigarette boats in the Straits of Florida so they called on the Navy to help out. Under the command of Vice Admiral (then Lieutnant Commander) Barry McCullough, the Gemini was the most productive drug interdiction platform in the 1987 season. The original ship's motto for USS Gemini (PHM 6) was, "Done Swiftly, Done Well." Based on her effectiveness in high speed pursuit of smugglers, the crew wanted to change it to something that reflected their true spirit. The hands down winner for a new motto: "Speed Kills."
