Here's the Toy Story Zoetrope created by Pixar, at the Disneyland Resort, Disney's California Adventure.
The video really doesn't do it justice compared to how amazing it is in reality.

I don't think you'd see the flashes in real life; you don't see the flashes when watching a movie.
It's just the cameras frame rate is higher than the rate that the lights are flashing, so it's out of sync.

If you are ever in Tokyo visit the Studio Ghibli museum they have one of these with Totoro characters. Just as mindblowing seeing one in person. They don't allow filming so you are unlikely to see it on YouTube.
