One of my favourite estuary species is the humble dusky flathead. The more time I spend chasing these ambush feeders the more addicted I become, and every hooked fish is as exciting as the last. Catching big lizards is all about persistence, covering water with wind or tide assisted drifts and observing the environment around you, keeping an eye out for nervous baitfish and observing your sounder for changes in water depth. Oh yeah, and a little patience never goes astray.

  • MrRiley97 - I'm using a Daiwa Luvias 2000, Luvias rod.

yeahwaffle & hoochiie94 - local South Coast estuary

OzzAmerican - You'll notice the line is semi-slack so when I lift I am not wrenching the lure 5 metres from the bottom, just enough to lift and hopefully pin a fish as they have super tough mouths. It's a technique that works 90% of the time. What have you been catching?

TheMitchtuber - Cool mate where you from?

ThePred2009 - Because I mostly drift with the wind or current, no burley.

  • Hey mateablem, try the Tackle Worlds at Taren Point and Wollongong on the South Coast. Or just do a search on the internet, you should find them. They are made by a company called Culprit.

Hey williamiscool123, 12lb fluorocarbon is fine, try 10lb if you have it, you'll get more hits. If you're feeling lucky, go down to 6lb!

  • Gday MrBosbos97,

The Luvias is very light and sensitive but also extremely strong. For such a very thin rod it has a lot of pulling power. I have almost finished editing another lizard video 85cm+91cm in one session using the Luvias, matched with a 1000 Luvias reel. I also use this combo for bream and surface luring. Love it!

  • Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated. I'll keep posting more videos when I get around to editing them.

Mr Chippermate, to a degree this technique would work, but as you are lower down to the water, shorter lifts may be the go. I'd still be aggressive in the lift but the angle will change slightly - I guess it also depends on the depth your fishing and the angle of the bank - experiment and let me know how you go - Cheers WK

  • Cheers Mark, I appreciate the feedback mate - great to hear it's been working for you. Hoping to reach the Gold Coast early in 2012 - I'll let you know. Cheers WK
