"Fly with the Wind" was McCoy Tyner's first all-strings project featuring Ron Carter on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute.

One of the most respected of all jazz producers, Orrin Keepnews's long and productive career has included working with such artists as Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk, as well as founding influential jazz labels Riverside and Milestone.

The Keepnews Collection, from The Concord Music Group is a reissue series of albums produced by this jazz legend. It features time-honored titles recorded by the true titans of jazz, originally released on Riverside and Milestone Records. All reissues, with 24-bit remastering from the master tapes, include original liner notes and Keepnews' voluminous new commentaries; when available, the original tracks are supplemented by bonus cuts from the sessions.

  • McCoy Tyner appears at Yoshi's in Oakland on a regular basis. Amazing to watch him up close and in person at this intimate jazz club on Jack London Square!

  • Fly with the Wind was recorded in a Berkeley studio just a few miles from Yoshis. McCoy seems like to the Bay Area.

  • He's so right McCoy Tyner is a truely underated artist, who suffered (in a way)from is association with Coltrane...

Some may say that this is a nice problem to have but his work should get more credit...far more...

Check out the Horizon album with John Blake on Violin... and Al (Kick Ass) Foster on Drums.... SMOKIN!

  • @jhg123456

that 'old fart' orrin keepnews has forgotten more than you'll ever know about jazz and jazz history.

    listen and take notes.

  • In the late 70, I was already a McCoy Tyner fan, when my college apartment-mate offered his Fly With The Wind album to me. He had bought it for the album cover art and didn't like the music. Needless to say, we had different musical tastes (he had no taste). I took the alubm and wore it out playing it so much.

  • @JazzVideoGuy yup, i seen him in the mid 90s at the original yoshis, with mongo santamaria, steve turre and paquito d rivera..totally insane

  • McCoy is my favourite pianist. His playing just reaches into my soul. Hopefully I'll get a ticket for his show at Ronnie Scotts on Friday.

  • i don't claim to know jazz, but i know what i love, and "fly,,," is one of my faves. i like the way the piano plays off the orchestration. kinda reminds me of "peresina" where tyner does almost the same thing. i love that contradiction.

  • I didn't study Music Theory, so I don't have all the words at hand to describe what's happening. My ears work OK though ;)

This man has such a breadth of experience that he brings to the table & you can hear it as you walk through his collection/career.

And yet, he has those distinct parts of himself that are clearly the "McCoy sound". When I hear 1:25-1:36 I just know it's him! Remember Name That Tune? I can Name That Musician in 1 measure ;) That left hand stuff drew me in back in the 70's.

  • I really love the sound of Laws' alto flute on 'fly with the wind', great LP!

  • Many thanks, I later figured that out.

  • @AsaCameron That's the title track called "Fly With the Wind"
