Thanks, yea I did over 100 of the thumbnail icons for AOE III the War Chief's Expansion. I'm glad you like what you see here, I'm hoping to find time to start making a few more videos soon.

what tool do you use for sketching

I'll sketch digitally in Photoshop CS2 or CS3 with a Wacom Intuos 2, 9x12 inch tablet. Though this creature here was drawn at a thumbnail size traditionally with pigment liner pens.

are there any other programs that are free like this?

I believe there are free based art programs but they won't be anything like this because these programs cost approx $500-700 depending.

Just do a search on google for "free digital painting programs" since I don't know the name of any off hand.

I realize this is a rather old comment but you should try GIMP 2.6 its free, idiot proof and actually of good quality, I have gimp and photoshop (bootlegged) and i much prefer GIMP
