The date was August 30, 1983, the place Bertand Lanes in Waukegan, Illinois for the 1983 $100,000 Waukegan Open. It had been 14 years since Les Zikes won his one and only previous title, which was at Waukegan in 1969. Les qualified 24th for match play and was able to move up all the way to the championship round qualifying 4th. Using an AMF Black Angle, he mowed through the field shooting 963 for 4 games. The clip shows Les's championship game vs. Johnny Petraglia. Petraglia was no match for the hot Les Zikes, as Zikes won 258-168. Zikes collected $13,000 for his victory. Zikes also defeated Jimmy Certain, Earl Anthony and Tom Baker on his way to his 2nd title. I believe Zikes still competes on the senior tour. Les's son, Lyle is a bowling writer for Bowlers Journal, and also shown is acclaimed bowling writer, Matt Fiorito, who recently passed away, who was with the Detroit Free Press. This particular telecast was on the USA network, who showed the summer tour in the early 80s. I believe the announcer was Al Trautwig, and the color was Mike Durbin.
Would love to see this whole show. We still bowl at bertrands for travel. We also bowl at the center that les owns. Just amazing that the only thing that has changed about bertrands is now they have automatic scoring.
