We took a trip to the ghost town of Kirwin, Wyoming. Not very easy to get there, but the scenery is like none other. The road was bumpy and water too deep for the Volvo - so we rode our bikes the last 6 miles.
At the town there are various buildings and old waste to explore plus endless hiking in the area. We slept in one of the old sheds that was raised up off the ground.
Mining didn't go so good here I guess, and people got tired of the long winters and constant danger so they all left. Numerous attempts were made to restart the mining operations because there is gold in them thar' hills, but none were of much success.
Amelia Erhart planned to live here after her famous aeroplane voyage, and contracted a cabin to be built about a mile past the town - but she never returned and the cabin was never finished.
I'm not sure what the elevation gain is exactly, but the town is at 9600 feet and we biked uphill the entire time...Riding back down was fun
