- No pleated pants (for men or women). Its dated and never flattering. It also draws attention to the hips, which is usually the widest part of a womans body. Instead, opt for flat front trousers.

- Avoid pants with a tapered leg. Like pleats, this also emphasizes the hips and can make you look wider. A straight leg, one that falls straight down from the hip, is the most flattering.

- Its always hard to get rid of something that you paid a lot of money for, but if its not flattering, get rid of it. No one cares how much you spent on it, or the label. In the words of Tim Gunn, its all about fit, proportion and silhouette not the name or price tag.

- Dark jeans are a must for every womans wardrobe. A darker wash is always very flattering and the most versatile (can go from day to night).

- You can do fitted on top of loose, loose on top of fitted, and fitted on top of fitted, but you cant do loose on top of loose that just makes you look big - all over. We need to see your shape somewhere.

- Logo and band tees need to go. Period.

- A jean jacket or blazer is a great wardrobe staple, (its on Tim Gunns list, as well as Stacy and Clintons). A jacket always anchors an outfit and pulls it together. Plus, a jacket can emphasize or create a waist and hides lots of problem areas.

- No boxy or double breasted jackets. Boxy jackets dont have enough structure and can make you look bigger. Double breasted jackets can add bulk, and as a suit jacket for women, are dated.

- One of the most dated items, that I still see a lot, are long trench coats (on men and women). Any style at or above the knee is best.

- No chunky heels they are illegal and add five pounds! Pointy or round toe shoes are best. Square toe shoes are a no.

  • Great question! When I say, "no loose on top of loose," I'm referring to the top and bottom of the body. You can do three loose items on top (or however many you want), just make sure that the bottom half (pants, skirt) is fitted.

You can do loose on top, fitted on bottom - fitted on top, loose on bottom or fitted on top and fitted on bottom. If you do loose on top AND bottom, then you just end up looking bigger and lost in your clothes.

  • Some good advice, my closet could use a good go-through and re-organizing! I'll definitely take some of these suggestions with me when I get around to re-doing my closet.

Btw Noelle you look gorgeous in this outfit! The long blazer/jacket is striking and complements the jeans and top quite nicely!

  • Love your ideas! Have you ever used fashion-ade to organize your closet?

no loose on loose? it kinda looks like your wearing a flowing shirt with a loose vest like thing?
