Vying for the heaviest band award in the "Seattle Four" with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains made a blend of metal and Grunge that only one other band could match. Their debut, Facelift, was released in 1990 and helped muddy the line between grunge and metal which also gained the band a wider audience in the early 90's when the metal scene was starting to die out and Grunge was taking off.

alice in chains is my favorite band and honestly. i don't care if this is there biggest hit and everyone knows. it obviously kicks fucking ass if everyone knows it! layne and jerry singing is great.

Although this contains major metal elements, it`s primarly alternative/grunge! Alice in Chains is all about feelings, through their songs you hear their souls, unlike most of the metal bands!

Not to mention Jerry's singing was top notch as well, and he was an excellent complement to Layne's unique vocal style.
