You know, what Vancouver did with the cauldron actually makes sense.
In the Summer Olympics, the cauldron and the stadium in which it's in also host the game's foot races (and others, I'm not entirely sure). The Winter Olympics, all the games are done in various places while the stadium in which the cauldron resides is only used for the opening and closing ceremonies.
So using an indoor stadium for the ceremonies and an outdoor cauldron elsewhere in town is a very good idea.
