i tried to do this.. and the meter just continues to flicker and doesnt find the tempo

hmm, are there drums? if not there's another way you can try. goto settings>metronome>click while playing, then hit play and adjust project tempo as you listen to the track, until the clicks match up..
is it a techno or rap beat or a song by a band? if it's a song performed by a band the BPM tends to drift around. you can make a tempo map in this case, which i may go over in a future vid
