Alcoholic Poisoning
What are Alcoholism and Alcoholic Toxicity, which is also called Alcoholic Poison? I understand alcoholism to be drinking in a way that negatively affects life, work, health, family and relationships. Of course it is also a physical and mental addiction or dependence on alcohol which one can not control unless one has the mind set to do so! There is such a thing as "accidental alcohol addiction" which occurs because as we age, our body changes the way it metabolizes and excretes alcohol. Older people and women have a lower body water and a higher fat content, which slows metabolism and results in faster indoxification and faster alcohol poisoning. Older people or those taking Codeine, Valium, Zanax, or Acetaminophen along with alcohol acquire alcohol poisoning and sedative side affects faster.
Why do some people who drink a lot become alcoholics, while others don't? Genes and environment both play a big part in it. Children of alcoholics tend more often to become alcoholics themselves because while growing up this activity of drinking becomes part of normal life. The more you drink, the more you want, because of the chemical changes in your brain pathways. Partying, pubbing, and always using alcohol for fun and pleasure gradually opens the door to more drinking and alcoholism. You want to feel liberated, carefree, confident and bold! You may use it to fit in with a crowd you like, who drink frequently, or just to pass time so you feel less lonely. You may want to plot out the real world for a time, or escape pressing work, financial or family problems. Sometimes you can't just say NO, or you may enjoy the attention being drunk and disorderly gets you.
Alcoholic poisoning, just like any other poison, has extensive disease causing potential. While alcohol can temporarily lift spirits, to much leads to mood changes and depression. Aggression and violent behavior is also seen. Those with symptoms of adult ADHD seem to be at a greater risk of developing alcoholism. Women may have a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome resulting in birth defects and mental retardation. There is a greater frequency of suicidal thoughts. They have probably been in court many times for antisocial behavior. Alcohol magnifies emotional feelings and reduces inhibitions. It exacerbates poor judge ment and negative relationships. Alcoholics may avoid family and friends because they are ashamed. So - they drink more and rely on alcohol to soothe pain and loneliness. Alcohol becomes a crutch so they don't have to deal with various problems and low self esteem.
Alcohol detox units have patients with a high number of serious physical diseases. The liver is the one we hear about the most, it metabolizes and excretes 90% of alcohol ingested, this can lead to Hepatitis, Cirrhosis, scarring and cancer. However it can only metabolize one once an hour, so the build up can quickly lead to alcohol poisoning if many drinks are consumed! Alcohol is toxic to the brain, reduces its blood flow, and increases nerve damage resulting in memory loss and even dementia. With alcohol withdrawal or alcohol poisoning, there can be DTs (Delirium Tremens), fever, delirium, uncontrolled tremors and spasticity and even Grande Mal Seizures and unconsciousness. Risk of colon cancer triples with 9 drinks of hard liquor a week, heavy beer drinking is even worse. Three drinks a day plus smoking goes hand in hand with obesity and high blood pressure, both of which increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Even a small amount of alcohol can evoke heart arryhythmias, increased blood pressure and enlargement plus weakness of the heart muscle. There is low energy because alcohol depresses blood sugar which is needed for fuel. Ulcers may result from increased hydrochloric acid, and also the relaxation of the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach, leading to heard burn from the back flow of acid. Other problems include anemia, night blindness, osteoporosis, dehydration, headaches and hearing loss.
