The first wave of men landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, was comprised of, among others, the U. S. 29th Infantry Division. Mr. Charles Durning, distinguished actor and hero of the landing and other combats, read Private Harold Baumgarten's letter written a few days after he was wounded in the water off Omaha Beach during the landing. The reading took place during televised ceremonies at the U. S. Capitol on May 30, 1994. I recorded the audio off air ... thank you Mr. Durning. The text is from various internet sources and have been edited. The pictures were snapped on June 6, 2000 at a small museum located in the National Guard's armory in Staunton, VA (a small but important collection). As a nine-year-old I stood with head bowed, on Main Street in Charlottesville, VA as the President's prayer for these assault troops ... among them ... the 116th Infantry Regiment (The Stonewall Brigade) ... was relayed over loudspeakers for ALL to hear. Company K (The Montecello Guard) was from Charlottesville. Technical Sergeant Frank D. Peregory was a member of Company K and before being activated was employed by a local lumber company. I shall never forget these Virginians and their comrades-in-arms. All citizens should find time to visit the National D-Day Memorial at Bedford, Virginia.
Outstanding! This is one of the best videos I have seen that was made exclusively from still pictures.
