Hello, Michael and Rick,
this is Nick in San Francisco,
reporting back to you on the accessibility testing that I've been doing
on this new YouTube feature: Video Captioning.
I've created a captions file for this video, and
and uploaded it, along with the video, to YouTube. So you should see
see it running. You should see what I'm saying in letters here below me.
If you DON'T see that, then you probably need to turn captions on
for the Player. The way you do that is there is a little button on the lower
right-hand side of the player. You press on that, and you'll see
an option to toggle the captions on or off. So you can turn them on.
This is a very good new feature, very usable, that YouTube has created.
You'll see white letters on a semi-transparent black background.
And you can change this. You can change the font size
of the letters. You can go three (3) higher or three (3) lower,
for a total range of six (6) steps in font size. The way you change this is
you use a couple of keys on your numeric key pad
on the right-hand side of your keyboard.
The plus (+) key, at the far right-hand side of the keyboard,
will increase the size of the font. And the minus (-) key, just above it,
will decrease the size of the font by one (1) step. And, as I say,
you can get a full range of six (6) steps, three (3) up, and three (3) down.
To change the background, you press the letter "B" key.
The "B" must stand for "background".
This lets you toggle "on" or "off" the semi-transparent black background.
Depending on what you prefer or the colors behind the letters.
So the Captions feature is very, very good. It's usable.
I've tested it on my home computer running Windows Vista.
I've tested it on my work computer running Windows XP.
And it works in both environments.
We are continuing to explore other accessbility features of captioning
in environments OTHER than the YouTube player,
a myriad of other environments. If you guys are interested in this,
of course, I'll be glad to answer any questions.
Michael, you know this. Rick, feel free to ask.
That about wraps it up. I think it's a good feature.
To me, it's quite usable, and really increases accessibility.
Bye-bye.
