This is a clip from the documentary "Immortality" (By Kaléo Films http://www.kaleo-films.com/) which featured my Dermal Display animation (based on a design by Robert A. Freitas Jr., http://www.rfreitas.com/). I included a few moments before my animation and a few moments after. This film is very good and features Ray Kurzweil, Aubrey de Grey and more while discussing why we age, and visits the most promising technologies for avoiding it. It is a smart film. Aired on French television in 2008 http://www.science-television.com/pariscience/en/fiche.php?sID=157

  • what about over population, if so many people won't die and keep being born then we will be even more over populated.

  • Sure that's a good question. There will be a lot of people that will not want to extend their lives, they will remain "natural". That gives some extra leverage to the numbers. But, for the increase in population, by the time we have this sort of technology we will also be able to use it to create habitats in space and on other planets, there is plenty of room out there for us.

  • @nanogirl I totally agree, however abuse of this new technology is eminent, if we are going to adopt the technology of "immortality" we should carefully consider whose hands we are putting it in.

  • @alohastewie well immortality wouldn't kill anybody - I'll tell you that much. : )

  • @nanogirl haha well i cant argue with that can i!

  • @alohastewie : )

  • we wont have any kids sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ...it would reduce pollution & replenish oxygen levels beyond anything governmental agriculture could achieve. These things I think Obama hints at with large scale, achievable 'social responsibility'. The science is almost redundant in it's myriad of solutions - as with great problems it is will not genetics that will feed the world properly

  • if every single flat roofed european family white painted the surface, the deflection would lower depletion of harmful solar rays and protect the Southern Hemispheres ozone layer dramatically... there are some equally fascinating facts about every european and american having a window box sized amount of the right algae....

  • There doesnt appear to be any religion in the Federation, and I think that is a good thing. The one thing that I notice and disagree with is Star Treks homophobia, there are no queers, bisexuals, or transgender. Those wont disappear with molecular replicators, and there is no explanation for their absence on the populations. But George Takei is homosexual in real life, so I guess that is about all the representation they will ever have.

  • I disagree - the Federation is utopian communist, all government personnel share equally military, commerce, infrastructure, and business - which is decentralized through their replicate technology, which replaces a lot of what we would think of as business or economy. Federation starships are commercial freighters, warships and exploration craft all merged into one. Anyone can travel the stars in Star Trek, in many episodes they encounter private starships and shuttles.

  • There is a difference between cross bred hybrids and DNA modified food. A global surplus could easily be achieved through the implementation of automated hydroponic green scrapers, as I call them. Vertical plant nurseries with complete stasis control. A symbiotic system of these across the globe could easily create a food/textile surplus. Your endorsing of this corporate control through genetic patents is absurd. You do not know who you are dealing with. These people want scarcity. Not abundance
