This is the original People City video, used for station sign-on and sign-off in the 1970s and 1980s at Citytv, Toronto. Tommy Ambrose and Gary Gray were commissioned to co-write and produce the song for the station. There were two versions - the vocal one, used at sign-on, and the instrumental version, used at sign-off. Both are included in this YouTube video.

Posted as a tribute to Gary Gray, Tommy Ambrose, and Citytv, and as an acknowledgement of a part of our Toronto, from days gone by...no infringement intended.

(Apologies for the tape creases - this transfer is from an original 3/4" videotape used at the station.)

  • @alicemalina i lived in toronto 5 years its a awesome city in summer clean for a big city i have lots of family there including my father but im spoiled because vancouver is super clean and very new for the most part and the mounains and the pacific ocean together make it a dream for living in canda but it does rain to the point of depression but it could be -35 like edmonton/calgary

  • @searaydrivingguy If you look outside of the downtown core, you will fine many beautiful parks and nature trails. There's lots of scenery, you just have to know where to look.

  • i took a trip to toronto 2 years ago not been there prior for 14 years i live in vancouver i was shocked how there is no senery its just concrete and old streets the people in the stores very rude to you lots of road work and traffic the houses and apts are old junks there houses are our crack houses if i moved to toronto id drop in comfort and class but the food is great shopping awesome and i love city hall cn tower and yorkville also the eaton center mall and younge street.

  • What a great song for a once great city, my city. Toronto born and raised, unfortunately those days are long gone never to return. A time when we took care of our city and pride in our city, now no one gives a rats a#$% anymore. Used to be the centre of Canada. Slowly becoming Detroit, in more ways than one. No wonder the rest of Canada hates Toronto.

  • @petclark1 That's a tad melodramatic, no? I like today's Toronto. Love all the new housing downtown, the redevelopment of old industrial lands and parking lots, the continued immigration and multiculturalism. If we could get Ford outta office and resurrect Transit City I think we'd be doing just fine.

  • I look at this and can't help but feel more than a little sad. When this used to air, Toronto seemed to have such promise and a very positive vibe. Hell, we WERE the city that worked and we kept patting each other on the back when we'd read those articles about how we were the envy of all those run down, American cities. Well, I guess we took a hell of a lot for granted and stood too long on our laurels and if that was our peek, than I guess now we're in a sort of free-fall of decline

  • It's been years since I've heard this song but I've always loved it and sometimes found myself singing it threw the years. Nice to actually hear it again.

  • Thank you for sharing the memories - For those of us who remember - we smile and pop back into time were happiness does exist, even if it is but for a fleeting moment

  • Kinda makes ya glad your Canadian listening to this!
