Lightning Storm - 3AM 8/8/07

This storm hit northern Hunterdon County NJ early this morning with as much cloud-to-ground lightning as I've ever seen. The same storm would affect New York City later in the morning, causing flooding and spinning up a tornado in Brooklyn. It's a longish video but there's plenty of lightning to be seen. Three big bolts occur at 2:58 (you can see the chain lightning with this one if you pause the video just right), 3:12, and 3:22 (this last one convinced me that maybe I should put the camera down and not get struck!). Please excuse the quality of the video as I shot it using my digital camera.

I just stood behind the front screen door holding my digital camera. Things got a bit hairy towards the end of the video with the last two strikes landing pretty close to where I was standing. I wish I had a tripod (and a better memory card/batteries) so I could have kept filming without endangering myself. The lightning maintained the same intensity for the next five to ten minutes. I had never seen such a lightning display before or since.

Hell of a lightning capture! I have seen some of my best lightning around this time as well, lol. This is great! Awesome footage!!!

@VideographyOfStorms Forgot to reply to your message! Thanks for the kudos! I knew that such a strike was coming with the unbelievable intensity of the lightning to my north and west. I've lived here for almost 35 years and had never seen such a freaky, continuous, lightning display. It was close to a "perfect storm"; temps near 80 degrees with dew points at least as high as the low 70s. Perfect conditions for good C-G strikes!
