WILLIAMSON COUNTY- State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias says debt settlement companies are causing consumers to rack up debt at an alarming rate. During a stop at Clear Point Financial Solutions in Marion.
Giannoulias announced legislation that would regulate these companies and limit the fees they charge. He encourages consumers to look to non-profit credit counseling agencies.
Paula Garrison of Marion says it made all the difference for her finances, "A lot of them have knocked our interest rate down to zero so the credit card companies if you enroll in a program like this will work with you."
Giannoulias says many of the non-profit credit counseling agencies are regulated by the state and are prohibited from charging fees, "If this organization that you reach out to says- don't pay your credit card bill that's the first way to deal with it that is a huge, huge red flag."
