What are the dangers of falsified corporate reports and earnings statements? John C. Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group, Inc. and president of the Bogle Financial Markets Research Center, in an interview on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law, discussed "fictitious [corporate] earnings." Bogle introduces the method Verizon took in reporting profits "in a year when the value of the [Verizon] pension plan fell by (2) billion dollars." Bogle's intriguing discussion opens the door for the average private investor to begin to understand how corporations are manipulating profit reporting as well as to begin to recognize the long term effects of these disastrous corporate policies on our society.
