Hatsuhinode is a Japanese custom to view the 1st sunrise of the new year:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_New_Year#Hatsum.C5.8Dde.2C_hatsuhinode....
Here is the first one of 2008 in Tokyo which occurred Jan. 1 at 6:51 am (Universal Time plus 9 hrs.)! Enjoy...
Cheers,
Gary
p.s. My fingers just about froze off filming this ! And you'll be pleased to know I have since invested in a cute little 1300-yen tripod for my digicame, so hopefully my videos won't be so jerky. :-)

  • i know you have heard this time again, but thanks for the shot. i live in la and it is good to see the sun rise in the land of the rising sun. maybe some day i will get to go and see it for myself before i die. haha!(^.^)

  • Thanks a lot ! But you're a year behind the times. :-) Pls. check out my new Hatsuhinode 2009 video too, taken last week.

    Cheers,

    Gary in Tokyo

  • Great video and some very interesting lense flare. Good move buying a tripod to save on those fingers. Thanks for sharing Tokyo's first sunrise of 2008 with us!

  • Thanks for your kind words, even though I was shooting it with just a regular shirt-pocket digicam (with a simple digital zoom video function). Plus, I MISSED the actual sunrise (aiming in the wrong direction!). Duh ! :-)

Speaking of videos, yours has been very well received by my Japanese university students.

  • Happy New Year!! I can't wait to go to Tokyo this summer!! This looks so beautiful!!!

  • Wow, summertime in Japan is magical...lots of festivals and fireworks shows. And there's always a beach somewhere nearby. Check out the English-language site metropolis dot co dot jp to stay abreast of the latest happenings.

Happy New Year to you, too.

    Cheers,

    Gary

  • Well at least you had a sunrise! I was very disappointed that I didn't get a sunrise for my vid. :(

Great to hear you've shown the vid to your students and I'm glad they like it. Thanks! Consider me subscribed :)

  • Ah-hah! Oiler country. No, never been that far north. We had some Oilers in my hometown of Houston, but they split for Tennessee several years ago and became the Titans. Traitors ! :-) Yes, this country is breathtakingly beautiful, but I haven't seen anything yet that comes close to the Canadian Rockies. Check out the mountain photos on my home page. I've climbed all of the 18 highest peaks in Japan.

    Stay warm...

    Cheers,

    Gary

One day wish to visit Japan and I heard it is a very beautiful Country to visit too and again have a wonderful new year!

  • Feliz Año Nuevo !

    Cheers,

    Gary
