Chinkon is a Japanese word which means 'quietening of the spirits'. This work is dedicated to victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan. The music is a requiem composed by composer Mark Isaacs, written specifically for bass koto, which is played by koto virtuoso Satsuki Odamura. I had been collaborating with both artists until last year on a four year long journey, making performances and exhibitions in century old Japanese cemeteries around Australia. It is apt that we have come together again to quieten the spirits of those who lost their lives.
