WENT TO # 12 IN 1970.
LYRICS: Walk A Mile In My Shoes

Joe South and The Believers
Written by Joe South

Peaked at # 12 in 1970
Re-make 4 months later by Willie Hightower managed only # 107

If I could be you and you could be me for just one hour
If we could find a way to get inside each other's mind
If you could see you through my eyes instead of your ego
I believe you'd be surprised to see that you'd been blind

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

Well, your whole world you see around you is just a reflection
And the law of common says you're gonna reap just what you sow

So unless you've lived a life of total perfection
Mm-mm, you'd better be careful of every stone that you should throw

Yet we spend the day throwin' stones at one another
'cause I don't think or wear my hair same way you do
Well, I may be common people but I'm your brother
And when you strike out and try to hurt me it's a 'hurtin you,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

There are people on reservations and out in the ghettos
And brother, there, but for the grace of God, go you and I

If I only had the wings of little angels don'tcha you know I'd fly
To the top of the mountain and then I'd cry?

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Better walk a mile in my shoes

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Oh, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

  • @brgdixon- you are very welcome! Ron

  • I grew up as a pre-teen in the 60s; teen in the seventies in north Georgia. I remember thinking at the time this song came out how I wished my friends could REALLY hear the song and know that it was coming from ME. So, if people can't hear it now, don't be too disappointed. Many of them weren't listening then, either. Kind of like the song "Vincent" by Don McClean; " they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will." Ah, well. SOME folks listen. I guess that's enough. Great posting. Thanks.

  • @mysunshine413- you are very welcome! Very nice comment! God Bless you, Ron

  • grew up in san francisco in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. grew up in the sunset district which was mostly irish guys I grew up with. we used to cruise in our hot rods and lisen to this song. the song says it all. this is a brutal world we live in! went in the marines in 1971. I know what the violence is all about and being poor. what I don't like is the people that take kindness for weakness! never under estimate anyone. its all about respect to me.

  • Great song with a powerful meaning!

  • The over modulation of this song is just awful and doesn't do this song the justice it deserves. Sorry, just my opinion....But a great song, tho....

  • Ron, you post the best sounding oldies on Youtube...Your friend Tommy

  • Joe South really was the best at telling like it was and is. There is a great rendition of this song available, Type in Sam of The Baseballs and the big German does it well!

  • Preach on......how true!!!!!

  • Such a great song. I was in high school when it came out. My Daddy loved Joe South's music/songs. Great to hear it again. I can't believe I didn't buy the 45 or the LP back then.

  • @brgdixon I was 18 in 1970, and this was one of MY favorite songs.
