WENT TO # 12 IN 1970.
LYRICS: Walk A Mile In My Shoes

Joe South and The Believers
Written by Joe South

Peaked at # 12 in 1970
Re-make 4 months later by Willie Hightower managed only # 107

If I could be you and you could be me for just one hour
If we could find a way to get inside each other's mind
If you could see you through my eyes instead of your ego
I believe you'd be surprised to see that you'd been blind

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

Well, your whole world you see around you is just a reflection
And the law of common says you're gonna reap just what you sow

So unless you've lived a life of total perfection
Mm-mm, you'd better be careful of every stone that you should throw

Yet we spend the day throwin' stones at one another
'cause I don't think or wear my hair same way you do
Well, I may be common people but I'm your brother
And when you strike out and try to hurt me it's a 'hurtin you,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

There are people on reservations and out in the ghettos
And brother, there, but for the grace of God, go you and I

If I only had the wings of little angels don'tcha you know I'd fly
To the top of the mountain and then I'd cry?

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Better walk a mile in my shoes

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Oh, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

I used the audio from an old vinyl LP to make this video! So it is original! Ron

The messages in Joe South's songs are just as relevant in our world today as they were when he first wrote and sang them. His songs sang loudly the golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Thank you Joe and may you rest in peace with the angels singing.

Joe South was a brilliant song writer. Never got his dues. Prophetic words from "The Bible". These songs were indicative of the intellectual mindset of the late 60's. Injustices to one's fellow man through bigotry and narrow mindedness. This song was about looking at another person's viewpoint before passing unwarranted judgment.

This song is a direct attack on the basic philosophical foundation of all intolerance based on social authoritarianism. .

Here's are two free clues because I am feeling generous today: 1. the word "businessman" never appears in this song; and 2. the only words of criticism directed toward the object of the song have to do with that person judging him, not with any aspect of his lifestyle.

I'm not going to argue with a moron who doesn't know what words mean. Keep fighting your fight against all sense and reason on youtube, my brother. You are terribly wrong, but that is your burden to bear.

Nay, not so. After that first sentence South automatically assumes that he's right and his establishment opponent is wrong, and if only his opponent would see the world thru his eyes for an hour he would see that South is right.

But what about the chance that South would agree with his opponent if he saw the world thru his eyes? What a hypocrite.

True, in the first sentence South says that his opponent and he should swap places. But all the rest of the song rests on South's assumption that he's right, his opponent is wrong, and his opponent would know that if he just walked a mile in South's shoes. What makes South so sure? Did he consider the possibility that he might change his own mind after looking through another man's eyes?

It's a great tune, but hypocritical.

If the song is suggesting that "all should consider another's views..." then Joe South is included. But where in the song did he mention that he himself should walk in the businessman's shoes before criticizing that businessman?
