The Faroe Islands, midway between Scotland and Iceland, were settled by Vikings a thousand years ago. Remote and intriguing, they look like something out of a Norse fairy tale.

People live in log houses with turf rooves, speak an ancient Viking language and delight in dressing up in traditional costume and singing Norse ballads.

But there is one part of their picture-postcard culture that outsiders find positively shocking. Every northern summer, Faroese herd pods of pilot whales to shore and butcher them with hooks and knives, before cutting up the meat to share with each family.

It's seen as a birth right and a celebration of Faroese culture. The islanders have steadfastly resisted international pressure to stop.

Kate Sanderson moved to the Faroes from Australia 22 years ago and married a local. She tells tells us, " You know what we say, save the whales -- for dinner!

Sanderson is the chief international negotiator on whaling and fishing. "Two generations of media hype and campaigning against whaling have really warped people's view of what whaling today is all about," she says. "Those countries that continue to (hunt) whales today are all countries that have a very long tradition of eating whale.

  • Folks..

    1) We don't kill dolphins. We 'kill' whales

    2) Do you know that these whales have had the most amazing lives living free in the ocean?

    3) This is something that we have done for many hundred years, it's a tradition.

And 4) Korea kill dogs... Just saying.

  • @e3artistmanagement So I guess you consider a Killer Whale a dolphin as well. Regardless, there are 1,370,000 non-endangered pilot whales in the northern oceans and the faroese kill 500 to 1,000 annually, about 0.1% of the population and the pilot whales reproduce at 2% annually. People eat meat, and this is a sustainable way to get it.

Perhaps you should focuss on other countries such as Iceland, Norway and Japan who have commercial whaling operations targeting endangered species of whales.

  • @ContrastNY You called me a fool and claim that pilot whales are NOT dolphins?? google pilot whales and find out the truth - they are, in fact, part of the dolphin family and are only exceeded in size by Orcas. Don't let the name fool you. Read up..google Pilot Whale and find out they are dolphins. Just because they eat them, doesn't make it right. Because they've been doing it for generations doesn't make it right, either. We can agree to disagree.

  • @e3artistmanagement THESE WHALES WERE USED FOR FOOD! Have you been to the faroes? Have you seen where the whale meat is stored? All of the meat is used for food, just as the natives of Alaska use the Bowhead whales for food.

Disagree all you want, but base it on facts, and the fact is they use the non-endangered pilot whales for food.

  • @ContrastNY Fool?? Really?? The slaughter of dolphins in this harbor wasn't for food. I never insiuated commercial fishing kill of dolphins is acceptable, either (no research needed on this statement....just reading what I wrote above!) Please point out the "whales" in this video, then let's compare IQ's (mine = 152, MENSA member, thank you.) youtu.be/bgUJQBCtHhg

  • @e3artistmanagement Do some research fool! They kill 500 to 1,000 whales annually for food, not for manlihood or some made up ritual, the same reason the Inuits of Alaska kill Bowhead whales which grow to 110 tons.

Ever wonder how many whales and dolphins are slowly killed due to bycatch in commercial fishing gear?

  • Anyone who supports a culture that slaughters helpless dolphins in some farce of manlihood should be helplessly ripped apart by hooks themselves! Shame of the Faroe Islands!!!
