This is a prototype of a cheap robotic book scanner built from a Lego NXT set. Software is written in Perl and uses the LEGO::NXT module.

  • FWIW, this took 2 days to develop. The FRDCSA system has taken 10 years (1800 times as long). If you find this interesting, please read about FRDCSA, IMHO there are much more interesting things there.

  • Google "frdcsa roboticbookscanner" and sign up to that mailinglist so I have your emails. We are developing a new version.

  • rotation ftw

  • But the pages are not flat, so you have distorted scans. Plus, a digital camera have a limited count of shots (some thousands?)

Plus we need a Hi-Res digital camera (not so cheap).

  • can you make a tutorial for making one of these? i'm considering making pdfs of some books, and right now, the cheapest/simplest solution seems to be to despine the books, pass them through a high-speed scanner, and then re-spine them.

  • Awesome! looks cheap to make, but would be very useful. Is there a tutorial on how to make one of these and where I can get the software? This thing would be really useful for me!
