The video shows how to replace a nylon piston in a Noodler's Ink fountain pen with a durable gasket supplied by Noodler's Ink at www.noodlersink.com for about 33 cents (the lowest cost piston filler repair recommended by a pen manufacturer with the exception of another of its models that costs nothing to repair once one has a simple piece of rubber). The fountain pen is the most economically viable writing instrument on earth when the long term maintenance is cost competitive, and hopefully this video helps to show how such competitiveness is possible. Have fun...as it is not overpriced and you did not have to mortgage your dwelling for such a pen in the first place...as it costs about the same as a bottle of ink! Remember as well...it takes the ink of about 50 large capacity disposable rollerball pens to fill a standard bottle of Noodler's Ink (when such rollerball pens cost $1.75 to $3.45 the savings can add up fast...as well as the good deed of not filling the landfill or consuming energy in a recycling bin with 50 disposable rollerball pens!). Your handwriting might also improve with a fountain pen...and the color selection/diverse properties of ink one fountain pen has is unrivaled by other writing instruments...disposables have a color selection of just ONE...not hundreds of colors as with a self-filling (that means filled from a bottle -- not wasteful and high cost disposable cartridges) fountain pen.

Two additional notes -- be sure the piston mount is round and smooth of aberrations as this will ensure a tight seal (this was not stressed enough in the film). Also, please pardon the moving hands...too much coffee!

  • This is an awesome tutorial. Could I ask where you got the gasket? What size is it? In your description it is a little bit unclear. You said it was supplied by Noodler's Ink at its website where I couldn't find any information about it. Thank you again for posting this great howto video.

  • E-mail Noodler's on the site - or send a self addressed stamped envelope with $1 to the distributor (instructions for the pen include this information) - $1 buys 3 gaskets...which I believe to be the most competitive cost formed piston filler gasket in the world. Some have been mailed - so the system is up and running. Noodler's runs a very lean operation, refusing price increases for multiple reasons - which results in shortages, but the best possible value to the customer - ALWAYS...
