One of the masters of the stride piano style associated with Harlem, New York City, Turner got his first big musical break in 1928 with his hiring by the Benny Carter Orchestra. He also played with Louis Armstrong. After World War II, he settled in Europe, living in Paris from 1962 until his death. A quite unknown video filmed in Paris during the 60s.
A bit messy, IMO.

No recorded version beats the 1921 recording (1921-1926 LP), although I like this too. He plays it in his own kind of funky way.

There's a thing he does in the turnaround a couple of times that seems like it goes across the bar line...but I don't hear it as a mistake, just his own thing. This is a great version in my book, and if you want to be able to tell the difference between the real deal and a fake, look for a version of this by Stephanie Trick on YouTube. Her playing is flawless, clean, and utterly without soul...

Does anybody know how stride developed?

stride isn't about making sure you never make a mistake. who can play perfect anyways? maybe art tatum came close to flawless playing but seriously! and besides there is no "correct" way to play carolina shout, no two people in the world play it exactly the same.

It's a shame to see all this pointless nonsense below but a joy to be able to see Joe Turner play. Forget arguments about his style, he's fantastic, go buy the Joe's Back in Town CD and get over yourselves!

@vimana19 Then if that's the way you want to think then alright. Music isn't meant to be interpreted one singular way anyways. What you think of my version of Carolina Shout matters no more to me than what I think of Joe Turner's.
