I'll be completely honest and say I first got into his music when I was really stoned. All of those frequencies and the dissonance were utterly incredible elements to the music. It was frightening and very romantic. A lot of people forget that minimalism doesn't mean that there isn't a lot going on. It is the methodology of saying the most with the least. Being economic is something Young had mastery of.

@hollyhung Totally!

@nyc11104 "his contributions to the undoing of music". Intereting point. I have a challenge for you: turn on the radio, listen to all of the radio stations you have time for. Then go to one or more shows at your local symphony hall. Never mind the obvious fact that you are not God and have no objective view of beauty, that no one has as beauty is subjective. Never mind that, tell me how much LaMonte Young influence you hear in music which, as you say, has been "undone"

he sees things differently to me but i find his speech profound and humbling.it probably helps that i love his music.

Lamonte Young is so interesting. He had to have a lot of courage to face what he did as a student at UC Berkeley. He is an example that artists should stick to their beliefs and pursue them while remaining open-minded and humble enough to accept the influence of others and new ideas. In that sense, he really an example for everyone. Many people allow their values to be corrupted through the desire to be part of a group. Young shows its not necessary to be in a group to be a part of things.

what the hell is behind his whole need to withold the "gift" he as an artist has bestowed. he's made such a real effort to prevent people from being "lifted up", not allowing access to his music, basically. having not shelled out whatever fortune was necessary to purchase a copy of the well tuned piano back in the early/mid 80s the first of anything I've ever heard is this pirated stuff on youtube! certainly didn't realize he was some kinda leatherman.
