He did 2 races as a 2 year old (2003) and 7 races as a 3 year old (2004). He should have won the Triple Crown in 2004.

The Bid may have been better,no doubt,but Smarty was like you said a freak racehorse. I too wish he could have been given the oppurtunity to run against Ghostzapper and St. Liam. Just imagine a nice 4 race season (as a 4 yr old),with the races nicely spaced to keep the horse fresh. Thats what Frankel did with Ghostzapper, I believe he would have been incredible.

This horse SHOULD HAVE WON THE TRIPLE CROWN. He was a bit rank no doubt in the Belmont(I believe it was exacerbated by RHT and Eddington),remember he ran a 2nd 1/2 mile in 46 2/5,when he hit the mile mark he had just went 1:35 2/5(2nd fastest clocking in Belmont S. history),he hit the 10f in 2:00 1/5!! People this horse's only chink in its armor was the fact that he wasn't blessed with a 20 lb heart like Secretariat. Other than that he ran an incredible race,maybe the greatest to not win the TC

i have to agree, but i have to say that i think Spectacular Bid was better than Smarty Jones. But Smarty Jones was a freak. He ran a 105 beyer in his second start at Philadeplhia. And in the rebel, he got the highest beyer ever for a juvenile at the moment. His Preakness was the best one since Secretariat's one. And as you have just said his fractions in the Belmont were to fast for any horse that wasn't Secretariat. Such a pitty he never got the chance to face Ghostzapper or Saint Liam

You know if his jockey pulled him up a bit in the preakness and conserved some energy, he might have had that last kick in the Belmont. Birdstone did great and deserved the win, but Smarty deserved the crown.
