To the south of the city of Cape Town lies the sweep of False Bay. It is the largest true bay in South Africa and one of the great bays in the world. The name False Bay dates back to the days when seafarers of old returning to Europe from the East would sometimes mistakenly turn north after rounding the cape at Hangklip thinking it was Cape Point.

The climate here is Mediterranean, with warm dry summers and cool, damp winters. False Bay has an abundance of beaches and plenty of tucked away character filled pubs and restaurants, making it a very popular family holiday destination. And there is accommodation available to suit all budgets.

The beach at Muizenberg, one of the longest and most spectacular on the Peninsula, is very popular with surfers. Fish Hoek is a bustling seaside village alongside one of the most popular bathing beaches in Cape Town. The Kalk Bay area has become famous for its array of unique and interesting restaurants, many of which seat diners right on the water's edge. Simon's Town, home of the South African navy, is also a very popular tourist destination.

Fishing is good in False Bay and at times there are large schools of Snoek, an oily, barracuda-like fish, that is much sought after locally. Seal island is a small granite island in the bay and is one of the main breeding sites for the Cape Fur Seal. The seals attract many Great White Sharks.
