Marilyn Horne sings "Simple Gifts" by Aaron Copland with Martin Katz at the piano.
From: VAI DVD 4323 Marilyn Horne in Recital - Milan, 1981
Though Marilyn Horne is known mostly for her virtuosic operatic roles, she is a superb recitalist who can scale her powerful voice down to the more intimate requirements of the recital stage.
In 1981, she appeared at Milans La Scala opera house in a recital consisting of music by Italian, German, Spanish, French and American composers. Horne was in particularly superb form that evening, partnered brilliantly by Martin Katz at the piano.
93 minutes, color, mono.

  • I think you miss the point. Marilyn Horne sings "Simple Gifts" in a very low key way as part of her La Scala recital. What's great about it is that she is singing about the simplicity of life in a place that is all about vocal fireworks. I think you've missed the beauty of what's going on here.

  • One of the most beautiful american song of all time!

  • El video es muy bueno

  • As an opera singer who often does this in recitals it is one of the most moving songs to share with an audience and is one of the songs in my repertoire that gets the most comments on its beauty and success as a conveyor of emotion. I don't think the trained voice takes away from it at all, actually the simplest songs can be the hardest to sing because there are no fireworks to hide behind. I come back to this recording time and time again, what a singer!

  • @lightspeedv the melody was written by Brackett but this specific arrangement was made by Copland.

  • "Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett, not by Aaron Copland. It became world famous thanks to its use in Aaron Copland's score for Martha Graham's ballet Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944.

  • Lyrics were written in 1848 by an Elder of the Shaker Community in Maine. Lovely additional verses are circulating, but are not part of Shaker tradition and remain unattributed. During the 1800s the elegantly simple tune was written in Maine by Shaker Joseph Brackett.

  • love Horne and this is really good singing but for me it was more a vocal showcase than a true conveyance of lyrical meaning

  • Song is Shaker - a breakaway group for the Quakers. Marilyn Horne was raised Quaker - so why should she not do a song that means something to her?

  • musica meravigliosa e poi lei...wow

  • @yabonjin I think you're quite confused. Nothing is more natural than the sound of her voice. It's a result of years of intense training, practice, study, & determination. But that is the sound of her voice. Nothing pretentious. Nothing overly complex about this. I think it should be against the law to be so narrow in ones thoughts.
