Dr. Linmare Sikich, associate professor of Psychiatry at UNC Chapel Hill's School of Medicine, is co-author of a study in Archives of General Psychiatry that found the drug citalopram, which is commonly prescribed to relieve repetitive symptoms in children with autism, actually increases those symptoms, and is less effective than placebo.
Dr. Sikich explains why the drug is prescribed, offers parents and patients some hope and looks ahead to future research.
