@rachelazw I didn't mean to ruffle feathers with my comment and so appologize for it anyhow. In my life I've wept over only two celebrity deaths. Lucy was the first and Gilda Radner was the other a short time later. I think Lucille Ball was a comic genius, but have also come to terms with the fact that she was human. She was a control freak that drove director's crazy after she had complete control of things. She even tried to show Jack Benny how some material should be timed.
@rob4791 , Lucy did NOT think of Vivian Vance as an "underling." In fact, she was so reliant on her in the beginning that she nearly bailed out of doing The Lucy Show if she couldn't convince Vivian Vance to do it with her. She didn't think she could go on without Vivian and made that very clear. She praised Vivian's work and respected her artistic input. She also praised Gale Gordon and Desi, and her writers, giving them most of the credit for her success on television.
I'm embarassed for Vivian Vance that Lucy could truly display what an "underling" she must've felt she was. This would be yet another reason I think Lucy sans Desi behind the camera was a VERY sad thing.
I loved " the Lucy Show " The color was really nice and brought out her carrot red hair and her blue eyes. I wish they would rerun this series too. Here's Lucy was nice too but I didn't care for Lucie Arnaz's performance she always was "acting". Whatever character Lucy played even in the movies she made it look effortless and not forced.
Wrong, this is the opening from the 1963-64 season. CBS switched to largely color broadcasts during the 1965-66 season, although the Lucy Show began filming in color two years earlier.
Yes, and there was a copy of it on YouTube for a while -- not sure if it's still here -- but it was indeed freaky and surreal. (Not to be too graphic or morose, but it looked somewhat like a severed head.). It's completely understandable why Lucy disliked it so much.
Lucy and Desi were always both extremely savvy about those kinds of things. When they were beginning "I Love Lucy", CBS balked at the production costs, and so Desi proposed that he and Lucy would cover the costs in exchange for ownership of the show. CBS agreed, never imagining anyone would have any interest in the shows after they first aired, and so it was Desi and Lucy (and Desilu) who profited, once syndication began. Lucy probably had that in mind when she was beginning "the Lucy Show".
Filming in color was something Lucy did on her own. After the success of the first season, she knew the shows would be rerun in the years to come and she also knew that all TV would be in color in the not too distant future. She considered it an investment.
