This is the first program transmited via Digital Radio in Melbourne, Australia.

It is a pre-recorded segment with all the main voices from the 15 Melbourne radio stations that migrated from analog to digital signal.

The pre-recorded dialogues are mixed with the song "You are the voice" in the background.

This segment was paid by Radio United, group formed by the different radio stations that migrated from analog to digital signal.

They all transmited (with the exception of Mix 101.1 and Gold) live from Federation Square on August 6 2009 during the morning.

  • who does this version of this song?

  • @bratina501 They can transmit video @ 8mbps and HD video @ 25mbps and PCM audio is 1.4mbps. What am I missing

  • @bumtownv2 its because the bandwidth available is not infinite, it is limited greatly and one idea behind DAB is a single frequency network for several radio stations. A consequence of this is that the digital signal has to be compressed so that more than one transmission can fit in the allocated spectrum. Not even a single PCM stream would fit in the bandwidth allotted to digital radio in any country with any system.

  • @AnthonyUK Also DAB is poor quality with MP2 coding and as it's transmitted at low bit rates suffers in-car with frequent breakup as you drive thru built up/hilly areas.

  • @bumtownv2 DAB+ has better sound quality, and is more reliable on reception too with it being less likely to suffer with incar reception and with it's more robust signal and better error correction is less likely to falter in difficult reception conditions.

  • The cover of this song, isn't great, it's too quiet and doesn't have as much impact. But I get the point. The basic radio circuit has become obsolete and replace with integrated chips and a massively compressed signal. Why don't they just broadcast a linear PCM stream?

  • @AnthonyUK What's the difference? We had DAB, then they shut it off right before they launched DAB+.
