They were the dreaded forces on the fringes of civilization, the bloodthirsty warriors who defied the Roman legions and terrorized the people of Europe. They were the Barbarians, and their names still evoke images of cruelty and chaos. But what do we really know of these legendary warriors? From the frigid North Sea to the Russian steppes, this ambitious series tells the fascinating stories of four of the most fabled groups of fighters in history, tracing 1,000 years of conquest and adventure through inspired scholarship and some of the most extensive reenactments ever filmed. Ranging far from their roots in Germany, these power-hungry pagans swept through Spain, then across North Africa, and eventually to the gates of Rome itself. All copy rights are for History Channel .

racism as we know it is a modern invention by european supporters of the modern slavetrade to rationalize why people of color didn't deserve democratic rights.
[H]istorically it is pretty well proved now that the ancient Greeks and Romans knew nothing about race. They had another standard—civilized and barbarian—and you could have white skin and be a barbarian and you could be black and civilized. -- CLR James

I feel an irony here... the Mongols were ruthless in their destructive conquests, yet they've treated their subjects with respect: there was a Freedom-Of-Religion in the Mongol empire, and all forms of torments were forbidden. Moreover, Kublai Khan's era was an era of cultural Fertilization. Though it must be noted that the Mongols destroyed in 1258 the Great Library of Iraq.

@WorldMongolMusic I agree. The only way to understand a culture is to immerse yourself in it, rather than listen to foreigners speak about it. I hope one day soon to visit your amazing country and learn about it first hand. Greetings from Ireland :)

@240kankan yes me too. I dont understand why they chose white actors. Its nothing to do with racism (Im white), its just silly. A documentary like this should transport you back in time so that you feel as though you are watching a re-enactment of events. Using Caucasians instead of Mongolian (or even other Asian) actors completely destroys this feeling. Its like watching a documentary about Alexander the Great played by a Chinese actor, or Julius Caesar played by an Indian. Stupid really.

@ManlaiSadis
Agree, I just finished Jack Weatherford's book and happened to watch this documentary. There is so much misconceptions here!!! It is so true that history depends who writes it.
