Hina Matsuri

This holiday started in the Heian Period. It was believed that special dolls called hina ningyo could contain bad spirits thus freeing little girls of bad luck and possible illness.

It is traditional after the Setsubun Sai to begin displaying the dolls in homes where there are little girls as well as department stores. The dolls displayed are those of the Emperor and Empress in Heian Period clothes as well as their sake bearers, court entertainers, military and things that a royal couple use to need to travel etc.

It is also traditional in many areas of Japan as you will see in the video to put dolls in boats and send them out to sea. This is called hina-nagashi and it is believed that when the dolls are sent to the sea they take bad luck and spirits with them.

Along with displaying and sending dolls down river little girls on HIna Matsuri (March 3rd) will also typically dress in their best clothes or a kimono and have a party with her little friends usually eating cakes and other sweets while looking at their pretty doll displays.
