As Obama Hosts Summit on Healthcare, Marginalized Advocates Ask Why Single Payer Is Ignored

President Obama hosted a White House summit Thursday on reforming healthcare. While President Obama said every idea must be considered, the idea of creating a single-payer national health insurance program appears to have already been rejected. We speak to Harpers senior editor Luke Mitchell, author of the article Sick in the Head: Why America Wont Get the Health-Care System It Needs.

  • Obama was the change people were looking for?

The insurance companies are in charge.

    How is that change?

  • Doctors are walking away now and companies aren't doing much to find any cures for anything. Just look around. When was the last time a cure for anything was found? We can't even get past Chemo and radiation, that does more harm than good (in fact actually kills people)! Yet, they've managed to patent human genes, so no research can be done for certain genetic cancers! How did that happen? Big Company CEO's have rule of the roost these days! Yeah...that's our Capitalistic system for ya!!

  • Obama made health care WORSE! The two best options are free market followed by single payer.

  • President Obama never considered Single Payer and Medicare for all because he doesn't support it. And he knew he would've never passed it out of Congress.

  • In Soviet Russia, healthcare ignores you.

  • icon- I KNOW THIS OFF TOPIC BUT

    I LOVE LIFE.

  • We need to look at an american single payer system that has been in place for 30 years - Hawaii !!!

Everything is more expensive in Hawaii, except their healthcare. (Tied for lowest in 50 states)

If it can work there - it can work here !!!

Also - a single payer system is not socialized medicine - johnnorvaisas needs to determine the difference...

  • Centralized planning is a major cause to our current economic ailments and also partly responsible in reguard to our health care industry/system due to heavy centralized palanning by the state (government). Roughtly 50% of our healthcare system IS ALREADY centralized/socailized and look where we are! It seems a bit foolish to disreguard the presence of this reality and its effect on our healthcare system in reguards to POSITIVES & NEGATIVES.

  • We are doomed if we become socialist!

High taxes less good health care much less doctors yeah that's what i want.

    You people are insane!

  • it will be too late before america wakes up AND america becomes socialist....

  • single-payer is cheaper than our present system. Also, the amount that one would be taxed for universal healthcare, would be less than the co-pays and deductibles of a private insurer.

  • And Germany has alot of private companies because the public plan is a joke and people know it.

I was talking federal government like medicare it is run poorly and going bankrupt social security is drained and running out of money.

We don't need another poorly run branch of government if we somehow get a single payer system it will make our taxes skyrocket and it will put millions of people out of work that work for the great health insurance companies.
