Observing the consumer

Yogi Berra, the American baseball great best known nowadays for his humorous quotes, once said, You can observe a lot by just watching. Peter Booth, managing partner and director for Tin Horse, the UK packaging design firm, observes: What people really do with things is different than what theyre designed for a lot of the time. A classic example is the experiments with a popular breath mint and carbonated soft drink that you can watch on numerous You Tube videos. The remit of the designer has to be beyond just designing things, Booth adds. It has to be involved in looking at the practices that the people who are using them are involved in.
