The song from the Lodoss OVA episode 5, where the bard sings a song about the king and his former companions, the Six Heroes. This song always touched me, evoking images of heroism and sadness.
This song does add a lot to the world, in the same way the many songs about ancient times are a big part of what makes Middle Earth feel like a real place. The language is also fascinating. This song is nothing but archaisms. It's more like Classical Japanese (Heian period, 1000AD or so) than it is Modern Japanese.
Whether or not one should trust Karla is an intriguing question of the anime, raised in the first episode (with Wort's direct question, "You of the Six Great Heroes, now feared as the Grey Witch--what are you up to?")
With the bard, I like this little touch from the anime's creators regarding Karla. Bards help people remember their stories. Well, here the bard ends on a sort of insinuating note with Karla. She is a looming figure, one that is not even named.
Thank you for uploading this clip. It's an amazing series. I like how the texture of the string instrument gets very gruff when the bard comes to Karla. The style of the illustration of her in that mural also seems very sharp, jagged.
Also, looking at the big sweep of the story, I really admire the depth that this very short song adds to the season. You get the backstory here in like episode 5 or so, short and very sweet.
