Martin Tyler looks ahead to the 1988/89 season, with a little help from Simple Minds. In brief: Ian Rush returns from a foreign country (as does Mark Hughes), QPR scrap their plastic pitch, Scunthorpe get a new stadium, Jim Leighton's reliability is unquestioned, ITV get the exclusive Football League rights and everyone agrees that £2million is too much to pay for Paul Gascoigne (including Gazza himself).

  • What was the occasion when Spurs & Arsenal were playing at Wembley? Certainly wasn't a cup final, so was it a pre-season tournament?

  • @mispudjes Yes. It was the first Makita International Tournament, played in pre-season between 1988 and 1994. The '88 tournament featured Arsenal, Tottenham, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.

  • They overdid Arsenal whipping Tottenham a little.

  • really miss Saint&Greavsie, it was before political correctness but unitentional, harmless entertainment. I still wish top league football was on terrestrial tv to the masses, those were the days before sky and player greed/corporate, constant talk of players wages got in the way, just for for love...football doesn't feel the same anymore really

  • $34million! Who would guess 22 years down the line Liverpool would outstrip that by themselves January on Andy Carrol.

  • Martin Tyler said something that got me laughing "ITV is the only place you can see the best league in the world" If only that were true now there would be no murdoch no sky and no overpaying to watch what is the peoples game. Would love to see a reverse of what seems to be a tide of Sky's armchairs viewers getting to see the top games just because they can afford Murdochs blood money requests.

  • 4:42 - Even back in 1990 they were at it, brainlessly hyping up the English league as the 'best in the world'. A dubious claim now, let alone during the Heysel ban era.

And cheers for uploading this, terrific nostalgia trip watching this!

  • All kids should be made to watch these old clips....But the Arsenal bits are just the same as now!!! weird...No spending cos of money spent on facilities.....

  • 34m all summer.

    how times have changed.

martin tyler in the commentary box is about the only thing that hasn't.
