They recorded for Pye Records which, if you talk to Ray Davies of the Kinks he'll tell you was little more than a tape recorder in a room! But they somehow got an edgey, expansive sound - sort of Spectorish. Listen to Kinks 'Really Got Me'. I liked the sound.
Oh ... and quite a few of us children of the sixties are still alive!
I bought all the singles by these girls in the sixties. Sadly very few others did! What appealed to me was their feisty, gutsy sound - sharp contrast to the sugar-sweet divas of the period. And listening to this ... it still does. Years later we get the Spice Girls! Born in the wrong era girls.
Lots of stuff on Wickypeedyfile about them - along with the Vernon Girls, Ladybirds - associated groups. Good that a nice guy in Arizona sees something there after all these years.
@joshuatrees This is Joel in Tucson again. What is the "Spectro Pop" site? As I'm typing it here as I'm writing this, YouTube has red-squiggly-underlined the word "Spectro"...so I'm either spelling it wrong or something else isn't correct. I'd love to know more about your Mom-in-Law's band "The Breakaways". Thank you.
@joshuatrees Wow..the brunette is your mom-in-law? Man, that's unbelievable. This whole conversation is possible via the computer age and you-tube. Hell, a week ago, I had never heard of The Breakaways, and now one of their sons in laws from England is typing me here in Arizona. It's mind blowing, and too cool. Well, tell "Moms" that this guy across the pond looked at her picture from 45 yrs. ago and said "she looks pretty hot" for me, will you please? I'll bet she still is! Joel in Tucson
The brunette is my mother-in-law Margo, and she's very much alive and well here in Liverpool! Take a look at the article about them on the spectropop site - they worked with many an artist in their day.
Heard these guys just last week on XM's "Little Steven's Underground Garage". Not this song, but one called "That's how it goes". I thought it kicked butt! I was about 10 in 1963...and glued to the radio 24/7. How I missed these gals I don't know. Anybody know anything about them? I wonder if they're still alive. They all looked pretty hot in their photo here, specially that brunette in the front. I'd love to hear some news on them....how they fared, other bands they're in?? Joel in Tucson

The Breakaways did backing vocals for a LOT of 60s stars, especially Petula Clark...
