You know he's sad, but he's faking that DAMN smile for everyone around him. He laughs whenever it comes up in order to cope with it. He not only lost the job of what he was the greatest at, but he lost friends, and people who had faith in him. In a way similar to a certain traumatic childhood experience he endured.

... But yet he's still pretending he's let it go...

the reason that phoenix lost his badge is because he presented Forged evidence to the court. the judge took his badge and left him to his fate. under all that genius there is pain in phoenix. He lost Mia, lost his favorite spirit medium, lost his badge, what more will he lose? his fans are dwindling and going over to edgeworth and apollo. he's a legend from the past. let him rest.
