13 crazy experiments-explosions you shouldn't do at home.
Starting with the propane-C3H8 filled balloon explosions. Slow motion reveals that initially there is blue flame which takes quickly yellow color. Secondly, acetylene-C2H2 (prepared by adding calcium carbide to water) flame is black due to unburned carbon particles. Nitrocellulose-C6H7O2(ONO2)3 burning is fast, but small pieces can be safely ignited on palm due to low density of nitrated cotton.
Trimethylborate-B(OCH3)3 exploded with green flame.
Rubidium-Rb and potassium-K reacted explosively with water.
Then came methanol-CH3OH cannon.
Aluminium-Al and lead tetroxide-Pb3O4 or simply aluminothermic mixture was ignited with a chemical time fuse.
Bomb group was neutralizing solvents that may have had some unstable peroxides formed. They used plastic explosive (contains hexogen-C3H6N6O6, also known as RDX) and a detonating cord. The second explosion was picric acid-C6H3N3O7 and some plastic explosive.
The last was a mixture of potassium permanganate-KMnO4 and aluminium-Al.

These are some snapshots from "100+ experiments in chemistry" collection and explained videos are available at http://www.chemicum.com/chemistry-videos .

  • that was fun to watch. also damn that was a lot of MnO4/Al flash mix! wouldn't want to be the guy mixing that batch up for a vid.

  • I agree about KMnO4/Al - it was a very careful mixing, still creepy. Wouldn't do it again. Friction, pressure or static spark would have set it off.

I remember a case when a few grams of permanganate|aluminium|sulphur mixture exploded when all components were crushed together in a mortair.

  • This explosion and some fireworks were done for the opening of our new chemistry building. But some passer-by called 911 "Chemistry institute is burning and exploding" and then they came: 3 police cars, 4 fire-brigade cars (one of them had an accident on the road), 3 lifequard cars and some medical vehicles. Lots of explaining afterwards...

  • too bad you cant do this in college chem labs

  • Well, some reactions-explosions can be done inside, for example nitrocellulose burning and propane filled balloon explosions. Acetylene makes some damage - black ceiling and walls. Alkali metals and water - only inside fume cupboard, but there is lots of cleaning afterwards.

  • @chemicum I have 3 vids and one is just under a half gram of KMnO4 + Al and it was in lightly crumpled paper not tightly confined in any way. BOOM! rung my ears good and blinded me from the flash for ~2 seconds and almost got the cops called on me at 2am, sounded just like a 9mm pistol (I hunt) and I live in town. really not fun but i can laugh now. so you see why I would NEVER put together that much, having had an accident at ~0.5g lol. braver than I. god vid I liked it a lot
