ArcelorMittal has helped Liberia to jumpstart its economy after being devastated by 14 years of civil conflict. Our Liberian iron ore mining project represents an important part of our business strategy. It is an opportunity to show how responsible and transparent business practices can benefit both the company and the host country, bringing about mutual understanding and trust, which in turn can further help to improve stability.
Following a review of the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the new Government of Liberia that was concluded on December 28, 2006, which called for an investment that would exceed US$ 1.0 billion, we set out on the task of rebuilding the country's mining infrastructure.
Since the start of construction operations in 2006, ArcelorMittal Liberia has created much needed employment both directly and through contractors. Significant progress has already been made in rebuilding road, rail and township infrastructure. Currently work continues in developing plans to start mining operations in 2011.
Thanks for this upload. Very good start and very inspiring for Liberia mines again.

"..we create infrastructure, we create jobs and we pay taxes..." What about paying the workers their salaries in time....not letting them wait for weeks???

@buxtonknight You did a great job. I hope you do more films in the future. I'll love to see a large number of companies on the ground been included in your film becuase we need to know what kind of developments these guys are carry out in our country after giving them access to almost 30+billion tonnes of our iron ore. So far, I think mittal steel is doing a great job as we can see lives been transformed. She's just one of the seven mining companies that sign the US$16billion to start operation.

I'm a freelance film Director based in the UK and I made this film. I found the way the company approached this mining project very inspiring and I hope this comes across in the film. I interviewed a lot of people who have nothing to do with ArcelorMittal (NGOs & local Liberians) and only got one negative comment from a villager living near the railway who didn't like the dust! That in itself is impressive, compared to similar films I've made. Delighted to see its on YouTube now.

@emmanuel5ful the test process took place I think last month and proved successful. Major shipments has also followed. Their target right now is 4million tpa for the first 5yrs and eventually 20million tpa. However, Mittal Steel just happend to be the first to start operation but is actually one of seven major iron ore mining companies that have signed close to US$20bliion in iron ore investments. They include BHPB, Severstal, Elinilto, China Union, Sable mining, Pitmin, etc.

@blk24ga I agree. Our country must come first becuase it's all we have. We are small but very rich to be labled as a third world country. However, it's due to the poor leadership and rapid corrupitons of past governments that have made us destitute. But, in as much as we placed the blamed on previous governments, we also attribute part of the cause to our ills on previous companies due to their faillures to execute their ethical and social responsibilities. This time, they must deliver blk24ga.

I appreciate what Mittal steel is doing, however, there's a need for a more Corporate social responsibility to be inplemented on their part. Unlike the level of investments undertaken in other countries by Mittal Steel, it's not the case for Liberia. Just attracting the natural resources for export is not in our best interest. They to work with our government so as to handle this infrastructure issue. We need the roads, rails, bridges, air ports, sea ports, human capital investments, etc.
