Gadsden City High School Coach Arrested

(05-20-09) Our top story this evening comes from Etowah County. A Gadsden City High School teacher and baseball coach is facing serious criminal charges. 26-year-old Nicholas Smith is charged with second degree rape and possession of obscene material. Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp says investigators determined that Smith became involved with a 15-year-old female student and had sex with her. Investigators say Smith also possessed obscene materials depicting a minor. Investigators say the incidences involving Smith and the teenage girl did not occur on the Gadsden City High Campus. They are continuing to interview students and faculty members as part of this ongoing investigation. If convicted, Smith could face up to 20 years in prison.
