I suffered from Selective Mutism for most of my life. This is my story about my struggles and my accomplishments. I hope to help others who are going through breaking the silence.

Nice remake of your videos. It's a bit of a relief not to hear the computer voice this time, lol. There are still things I wish you'd explain, like how you learned about SM and what steps you took to be more comfortable in the classroom. I love your story, though.

@Elemarth Thanks, I was finally comfortable to use my own voice. I learned about SM by seeing it on 20/20 then telling my mom I think I have it. She then told me I was diagnosed with it but didn't want to tell me for some reason. It made me really mad because I would have felt better if I knew what was wrong with me. I only became comfortable in the classroom because I was in special education with the same teacher

@Elemarth I wasn't in regular classes all day and there were only a couple of kids in my class so it was easier for my teacher to help me. I also had a behavior therapist and was put on Paxil. It took a lot of support and pushing from my teacher. She learned when to push and when not to.

Thank you for this video it really helps me understand what my daughter is going through. She is 5 years old and only talks to close relatives and sometimes won't be quiet. But she won't speak a word to anyone else or even if they are in the room with me. There are people she has known her entire life and see almost everyday that have never heard her voice. When i watch this video i see the same faces and actions that she has in those situations. is there any advice you could give me?

@maulice I think it gets hard when the people around you only know you as quiet. I had to get used to talking to people who for years I didn't. They had to get used to me talking. It was harder for me to talk to people who I had known for years than people I just met once I broke through the silence. It became so a part of my identity that it was actually hard to give it up. It was the only way I knew myself and how others knew me. It was getting over that change that was hard.

Thank you for this wonderful. I am only a kid and I currently have Selective Mutism. I am wearing out of it, I only talk to some students, and all teachers but I am very mute in class. I don't think I am shy, I write down too many thinks for me to speak with, or write them down in a piece of paper. I even go on translate.google.com to have the robot voice translate for me. Sometimes I wish I could speak. On April 26, I spoke for the first time without WHISPERING. I am so glad there is support.:)

Thank you so much for this video. My daughter with SM is 9m and I think it might be a little early to show it to her just yet (she does know she has SM and is receiving help for it at school) but I do hope your video is still here when the time comes that she needs more encouragement to know that she can totally overcome it.
