You could visibly make out the trans-sonic shockwave over the wing of this Boeing 757. Look for a vertical line of diffraction that moves slightly back and forth.

  • Called Wing de-icing son.

  • @fannypenis No, it's not.

  • @kurtjahr Yea, I've just realised that after investigation.

  • @fannypenis No problem! I think the fluid dynamics of transonic airflow is more interesting than headed leading edges, anyway :)

  • It's not breacking sound yet, it's in transonic flight Mach 1 would be when the normal shocks are at the trailing edge

  • @col737zc Yes, I am aware of this. The airflow at the shockwave has a local mach of 1, even though the free stream airflow is considerably less (probably 0.75-0.85 for the 57). The airflow from almost the leading edge to the visible shockwave is supersonic.

  • looks like a pretty old wing design - no wingtips/winglets and plenty of vortex generators to re-energise the flow. Oh, and you are right, it is a really interesting thing to study, where did you study it?

  • @col737zc when the air passes over the top of the wing, it accelerates and goes sonic/supersonic

  • the fact that they're perfectly vertical on screen, which means they're at a completely illogical angle on the wings makes me think it's more likely an imperfection in the 757's windows *such as a small rim in the glass perhaps, no clue why they would do that but whatever* than an actual shockwave that is perfectly upright in the camera's view, yet at an angle that makes no sense at all to the wing

either that, or im seeing the wrong "shockwave" (all this not meaning they couldn't exist)

  • @TheBeatlesTime not a bad idea, I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching!
