Vid related: It's my computer and her new printer.

Review:

It's a Samsung CLP-315 [duh]. It prints in color or black-and-white, at something like 4 ppm color / 17 ppm B&W. Anyway, it's impressive. My old inkjet couldn't even load paper straight and took forever to print because inkjets have to move the heads back and forth.. You know how they work.

Anyway, laser printers are almost always much faster, and this one is excellent for the size and price. In the video, I have it turned on and plugged in, and I print a diagram from Dia to see how long it takes to print a single page from an idle state.

The CD comes with drivers for Windows, Mac, and Linux as well as the manual, which is very nice. I've copied the manuals to my hard drive so I don't have to bother going online or hunting for a paper manual.

I personally run Linux on my laptop, and it comes with a driver that works flawlessly with Kubuntu 8.04 and CUPS. Just make sure the CUPS service is turned on, the print driver won't work if the print server's off.

The printer is I think around 150 or 170 dollars from Newegg, so it's more than some inkjets, but less than a really high-quality inkjet.

I dunno how it is for quality, but there's no such issue as print head alignment, print head cleaning, or anything of the sort, so it looks great for text / diagrams and adequate for photos. I don't do photos a lot anyway, so whatever.

I did some math for paper and toner, and it costs about 5.2 cents per page to print black-and-white, and probably something like 6 or 7 color, though these depend hugely on how much color you're using.

Anyway, it's cheaper than the library printer, and I don't have to walk anywhere to use it. It's great. You should buy one.

  • This printer goes to sleep and the wifi card will not connect back up unless you power cycle the printer. Don't put it in the basement and expect not to have to touch it until you need your printout. You'll be making two trips. One to power cycle and another to get your printout. VERY ANNOYING.

Also, NOT AirPrint capable. If you have an iphone DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PRINTER.

  • @TheNortonio - Weird, mine doesn't even have wi-fi.

Also, can't you just plug the USB cable into the iPhone?

    *trollface*

  • A good printer? This printer is horrible, I got given one new in box but my gosh its one of the worst printers I've used. My Canon inkjet prints better text than this. It prints pictures terrible, and I cannot print standard quality only draft otherwise it prints an error code when printing multiple pages I can't even test out high quality print.

  • @MickInOz82 - That's pretty strange, have you tried updating the drivers?

I've printed a lot of multi-page assignments this year, pretty sure they've been in standard quality.

I wouldn't expect it to print pictures for shit, though, it IS a laser printer. I got it for economic text printing.

  • The toner cartridges are expensive (aren't they all?)

Expect to spend around $US65 per cartridge and there are 4 of them. Also, they are not very big, so don't last long.

Overall, this is a good printer, but mine kept jamming paper after only 14 months and very light use. Searching the internet, it seems that this is a very widespread problem with this model.

  • @julianc007 - I don't use color much, and I haven't printed much yet, I'll let you know when I do replace the black cartridge.

Mine hasn't jammed yet, but like I said, I rarely print anything, and I just recently set it up to work in Arch Linux.

  • Organized video is the best way to display or post an article, thank you for making it easy to digest your post.

  • If your looking for a good wireless printer and you have an iphone don't bother with this one. Look for an "Airprint" capable printer. THIS ONE IS NOT.

So remember. DON'T BUY THIS SAMSUNG CLP-315 if you want AirPrint capable printer.

  • It's a shit colour laser printer! it did not work before changing the first tonner.

I never buy a samsung printer!

  • CANCER HAZARD

  • image printing quality is horrible. Will get HP as soon as toner runs out (the black toner that is, as I wont be printing any color images)

  • @cyborgtroy it downloaded drivers after I installed the CD, I'm not printing photos just a picture that is amongst mainly text, the colours tends to blur rather than getting a crisp line. I actually managed to print a WEB page in 'Best Quality" in Greyscale but when I try to print the same document in colour it prints out SPL-C ERROR Incomplete Session time out, POSITION 0x14ef8 (85752), SYSTEM src/os_hook, LINE 1646, VERSION SPL-C-5.35 11-20-2007 I error like that in standard and multiple pages
