In efforts to prepare for the 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco mainland the Shamy brothers find a mountain lake near their home in Utah to see what it feels like to be in really cold water ... and the answer is ... it hurts! Rangers said the lake is 42 degrees, we are just glad that the water in the bay is a little bit warmer at 55 degrees. This training in no way prepares an individual for the endurance it takes to swim the 1.5 miles but it might help with the initial shock the skin feels when entering water that cold!

  • Did you finish this year's Escape?

  • @Sammyfest

Unfortunately I was not able to attend the 2010 escape. I hold the experience from 2009 as one of the greatest adventures I have ever had.

    Did you race this year?

  • @Aaron51281 Oh yes, and it was the most unforgettable experience I ever have. Will attend the next year's Escape too, if I get the slot.

  • Ya baby! I need to get out and do stuff too!

  • Good job dude. I hope being in the freezing cold water for a prolonged period of time doesn't make you any less or more crazy. I think you're in a good state of crazy right now.
