I guess bums were cheap labor back in 1966. The King was paid only 4 bits (50 cents) for two hours of pushing broom. In 1966, the Federal minimum wage was $1.25 per hour. On the plus side, The King could rent a crappy room for only 50 cents. That's only 2/5 of an honest hour's pay. Today, the federal minimum is $7.25 per hr. Two fifths of $7.25 is $2.90. The cheapest motel rooms are now around $50 per night. That's almost 7 hours pay. Today, The King would have to be a hard working man.
