Students from film, tv and media related courses were involved in all aspects of the production, from camera work, sound recording and event journalism,Over 1,500 students compete in the all-day event, which features 52 matches across 25 sports, ranging from rugby league and football to mountaineering and Ultimate Frisbee. Leeds Met, who have never lost the city's inter university competition, beat the University of Leeds by eight matches 30-22 -- the closest ever margin.

Varsity's main event is the men's rugby union match held at Headingley Carnegie stadium. A crowd of 9,914 students watched as the University of Leeds secured a 14-10 victory in the showpiece match for just the second time in Varsity history.

The game started slowly with both teams struggling to cope with the swirling wind and driving rain. Leeds University took the lead in the 12th minute with an Alex Graf Grote penalty. The Russell Group institution had several more chances throughout the half to increase their lead but Graf Grote missed his next two attempts.

Leeds Met, who had not been out of their half since the 9th minute, snatched a try just before the interval to take a fortuitous 7 - 3 half time lead; Dan Matthews capitalising off some strong work by the Met front row.

Leeds Met started the stronger of the two sides in the second half, but their possession was mainly circumstantial and they failed to threaten the University try line. Leeds University finally made Met pay for their indiscipline as Graf Grote tamed the wind to convert a penalty directly in front of the posts to bring his team within one.

Ten minutes later, Leeds Met again gave away a penalty allowing Leeds University to take a 9-7 lead, thanks to a James Twoemy conversion. Losing the lead appeared to jolt Met into some urgency and almost from the restart a Dave Treglown penalty made the scores a delicate 10-9 lead going into the final 15 minutes.

Leeds Met seemed set to enjoy an undeserved victory, but their defence, which had been undisciplined yet resilient throughout, opened up in the 70th minute.
A break down the left wing gave Leeds University an overlap, allowing Ed Hough to touch down in the corner. Twoemy failed to convert, setting up a tense finale.

Leeds Met controlled possession for the final ten minutes, and came within inches of snatching an unlikely victory with some strong work from successive lineouts five yards from the University try line. But once again it was indiscipline that cost them as a knock on three minutes after time had elapsed gave Leeds University the victory and leaving Leeds Met to rue what might have been.

Commenting on the day's event Leeds Metropolitan University Athletic Union president Lewis Wildridge said: "Varsity turned out to be yet another fantastic experience for students to be involved with. Over 50 different matches were played across a variety of sports over the course of the day, and every single student involved in this has spent countless hours in preparation for these games. To win Varsity for the seventh successive year, in the closest fought competition we have faced at Leeds Metropolitan University, is a credit to the hard-work, dedication and talent of the athletes here. I am extremely proud to be a part of such a rewarding event, and I think I speak on behalf of all students at Leeds Metropolitan University when I say thank you to the University of Leeds for such a great day!"
